"Momma Said Not To Cry"
Poem By Joda Khan

I'm am empty riverbed
scorched and dry
Momma said not to cry
she said men stand tall
never show their pain
so I told myself it didn't hurt
when my father had to die
I held my body still and straight
tried to look older than my years
I buried a part of me that day
but I can't remember where
when my anger rages like a storm
blowing through the garden
where my emotions grow
I clench my fist
batten down the hatches of my soul
and when the rain stops falling
my eyes are dry
and guess what momma
I didn't cry
I'm an empty riverbed
scorched and dry
nothing seems to grow
no sweet shade to cool my fears
Momma
I think I buried more
than just my tears
I know you said that men don't cry
and heaven knows I've tried
but sometimes life is so very cruel
you need a place to hide
but for the life of me
for the life me momma
I can't remember where
