"My Sisters' Pain"
Poem by Joda Khan

backbone strong
hips ample and round
from your breast you fed a nation
Aunt Jemima rags
once covered your kinky hair
watching your boy babies grow to men
under the cold Anglo stare
you've carried loads
fit for a mule
sometimes cast in the role of the fool
but I know you my sister
you wear the patience of Job
you're the queen of this planet
you bore the sovereigns of the globe
Ethiopia remembers you
when you stood proud and erect
mother nature pays you homage
in every cause and effect
you once walked along the Nile
with grace in your stride
skin burned to perfection
the seeds of our very blackness
you carried inside
the world calls you bitch
whore
sister, sister you must be in great pain
to watch kings crawl
and completely forget your name
Nefertiti, Aphrodite your sisters in blood
queens and rulers
ordained from above
then the shadow of deceit
fell across the face of the land
kingdoms were toppled
your mate less than a man
yet all the while you stood strong
you rocked the babies
while kings crawled on their knees
and still they took their anger out on you
one foot on your backside
the other walking them swiftly, surely
toward those cages
designed to hold a nation
the strength that we need
is contained in your souls
the seeds you now carry
are cunning and bold
from your pain my sister
a new nation must unfold
you'll be their mothers, their mentors
the truth must be told
so brothers
if you find yourselves weeping
never do so in vain
when you drop your heads and shed a tear
be remembering our sisters' pain
