"ONCE BITTEN"
Poem by Joda Khan, Painting by Ejay Khan

once bitten by the serpent
you're never the same
his venom is strong
in your system it remains
night sweats and cravings
fingers icy and cold
the serpent now owns you
he's the master of your soul
just below the surface of light
is a shadow-land filled with despair
those of us who have once been bitten
nightly assemble there
torches are raised
flickering through the gloom
a tribute to the serpent
and to the hopelessly doomed
unwashed bodies
twist in musty corners
captives of lust
in a world without mourners
pleas from your loved ones
can be heard through the mist
they can't understand
why it's so hard to resist
once bitten by the serpent
he'll remember your name
and at the most untimely hour
he'll make his claim
